AeroPress is one impressive bit of gear to say the least. Compact, sturdy, produces minimal mess, I mean what else could you want? Oh yep that right, it also makes a damn good cup of coffee.
The AeroPress coffee maker has become more than just an alternative brewing method , it has brought together such a community of fans that each year an event is held for the best cup of coffee made.
The World AeroPress Championship is a fan driven global event, bringing together on average 3000 competitors from over 60 countries. On a side note, we sponsored the 2018 World Championship held here, Aeropress Australia. So what makes the aeropress coffee maker such a big hit?
Coffee grounds are brewed with full immersion and then pushed through a paper filter (or metal filters), to create a smooth, rich and grit-free coffee. The whole process takes just two minutes from ‘go to flow'. This little device gives you access to numerous brewing methods and caters to an extensive range of coffee preferences.
The AeroPress is a perfect option for travel, it marks one our favourite portable espresso units on the market today. Surprisingly the aeropress is incredibly durable (practically indestructible) and is such a space saver that you might even lose it, well I’m probably over exaggerating there but you get the point.
The aeropress go has been designed to be the optimal travel brewing unit. Stored within its own mug making it extremely easy to fit in a travel bag, desk or even rolled up with your camping gear. So there’s one less thing to pack for your trip!
No need for additional coffee cups! The aeropress coffee maker is incredibly easy to clean making aeropress brewing the ultimate travel immersion brewing method on the market. It takes in common techniques from other brewing methods such as pour over , French press , moka pot and combines them in such a compact and versatile way.
As the AeroPress has developed a following, many companies have produced additional coffee accessories to really take things one step further. Aeropress Coffee Standard Method.
- Grind your favourite beans
- Brew Ratio: 15:240 (ie 15g per 240ml)
- The grind should be as coarse as sea salt
- Push plunger out of chamber
- Insert filter paper into the Aeropress lid, and use hot water to thoroughly rinse.
- Either paper filter or Stainless Steel filter
- Twist filter cap onto chamber
- Stand chamber of mug or server
- Add 15g of fine-medium coarse ground coffee
- Shake to distribute coffee
- Add 200ml of water at 95-degrees up to the “1” marking on the aeropress
- Stirr for 10 second
- Allow to steep for 2 minutes total
- Insert plunger and Plunge gently, pausing when you feel resistance until the plunger reaches grounds. Plunge should take 15-30 seconds.
- When the press has finished, you will hear air hiss through your filter. The coffee is complete.
- Enjoy your Aeropress coffee
Aeropress Inverted Method.
- Grind your favourite beans
- Brew Ratio: 15:240 (ie 15g per 240ml)
- The grind should be as coarse as sea salt
- Align plunger with “4” marking on chamber
- Place Aeropress upside down, rubber stopper is facing upwards so you can fill the brew chamber with grounds and water.
- Add 15g of fine-medium coarse ground coffee
- Add 240ml of water at 95-degrees up to the “1” marking on the Aeropress
- Stirr for 10 second
- Put filter in cap
- Either paper filter or Stainless Steel filter
- Allow to steep for 2 minutes total
- Flip “Invert” Aeropress onto a mug or server
- Plunge gently, pausing when you feel resistance until plunger reaches the grounds. Plunge should take 15-30 seconds.
- When the press has finished, you will hear air hiss through your filter. The coffee is complete.
- Enjoy your Aeropress coffee!
World Aeropress Championships or WAC
The world aeropress championships or WAC is a fan driven global phenomenon which has been bringing challengers from all over the world to compete for the best aeropress recipe.
Competitors come from over 60 international countries to compete, the championships combine intense competition with a fun party that has lots of beer, music and plenty of good vibes. Last season had almost 70,000 spectators cheering on 3000 competitors. Two of our favourite recipes from the world championships.
Winner 2019 W.A.C. - Wendelien van Bunnik, Netherlands
Directions:
- Pour 100g of water on the coffee in 10 seconds
- Stir firmly for 20 times in 10 seconds
- Put the filter cap with rinsed filter on the brewer and gently press out the excess air
- At 40 seconds, flip the aeropress and press out all the coffee. You should end up with 60g extracted coffee.
- Add 100g water to the extracted coffee
- Taste and add more water until the desired strength
- Cool the brew down to roughly 60 degrees by stirring and decanting Slurp and enjoy.
Ratios:
- Coffee: 30g
- Grind: 7/10 (1 = very fine / 10 = very coarse)
- Water: 100g Spa Blauw water (30PPM) @92 degrees
- Brewer: Inverted
- Filter: Aesir Filter (rinsed)
- Total brew time: 60 seconds
Second Place 2019 W.A.C. - Benha Khemachaeva, Thailand
Directions:
- Add water 94 degrees into 110g server.
- Put 1 paper and 1 metal filter into filter cap and then rinse
- Add 35g of ground coffee into chamber
- Add 100g of water into chamber
- Stir for 15 seconds and then turbulent wiggle for 10 seconds
- Wait until 1.15 min. Put the filter cap on and flip the aeropress.
- Using the elbow to press the aeropress into the server for 30 seconds Enjoy!
Ratios:
- Coffee: 35g
- Grind: 8/10 (1 = very fine / 10 = very coarse)
- Water: 94 degree (80PPM)
- Brewer: Inverted
- Filter: 1 paper and 1 metal
- Total brew time: 1 min 45
Is the AeroPress better than pour over?
Well saying one brewing method is better than another would be a little subjective and based on the individual’s preferences. Let’s say they both produce a delicious cup of coffee.
Although each brewing unit prioritises a well extracted cup, they both have different purposes. Pour over is designed as a ‘slow coffee’ allowing gravity to do the work throughout extraction, highlighting all the flavour profiles your coffee has to offer.
The AeroPress works hard to deliver you a well-rounded cup anywhere, anytime. The AeroPress is versatile, durable and compact which makes brewing easier than ever!How much coffee does one AeroPress make?
The AeroPress can yield up to three servings of the espresso style concentrate. You can drink as is or you can add hot water for more of a filter / black coffee brew or alternatively texture some milk for a latte! However, the smaller sibling, AeroPress Go offers two servings of coffee.
What grind size does my AeroPress need?
The AeroPress generally requires a medium grind, try to achieve the particle size similar to table salt. If your grind, you’ll have troubles pressing the device down and on the other hand you want enough resistance to achieve full extraction.
Is the AeroPress similar to an espresso?
The AeroPress produces an espresso style concentrate however its profile will be different in nature due to its extraction process. As you can imagine an espresso brewed from within a machine is extracted within a high-pressure environment.
